Learn how to prepare matcha at home with this simple step-by-step guide. Discover the right water temperature, whisking technique, and tips for creating smooth ceremonial matcha.
Matcha has become one of the most loved drinks in the world but many people still wonder how to prepare it properly at home.
The truth is that making matcha is much simpler than it looks. With the right technique and a few simple tools, you can create a smooth, vibrant cup of matcha in less than a minute.
In this guide, we’ll show you how to prepare matcha step by step.
What You Need to Make Matcha
To prepare traditional matcha, you only need a few basic ingredients and tools.
Ingredients:
• 1 teaspoon ceremonial matcha
• 60 ml hot water (not boiling)
Tools:
• Bamboo whisk (chasen)
• Matcha bowl (chawan)
• Fine sieve (optional)
Step 1: Sift the Matcha
Matcha powder can form small clumps. Sifting the matcha before whisking helps create a smoother drink.
Add one teaspoon of matcha into your bowl using a sieve.
Step 2: Add Hot Water
Water that is too hot can make matcha taste bitter.
The ideal temperature is around 80-90°C.
If you just boiled water, wait about one minute before pouring.
Add about 60 ml of water.
Step 3: Whisk in a “W” Motion
Using your bamboo whisk, whisk quickly in a zig-zag or W motion.
Avoid stirring in circles.
Whisk for about 10–15 seconds until a light foam appears.
Step 4: Enjoy Your Matcha
Once smooth and slightly frothy, your matcha is ready.
High-quality matcha should taste:
• smooth
• slightly sweet
• gently umami
• not overly bitter
Matcha is not just a drink — it can also be a calming daily ritual.
Optional: Make a Matcha Latte
You can easily turn your matcha into a latte.
Prepare the matcha first, then add:
• warm milk
• or cold milk with ice
Oat milk pairs especially well with matcha.
