Why the Whisk Matters
You cannot get the signature jade froth of a true matcha latte or traditional tea with a metal spoon or plastic whisk. You need a chasen — a traditional Japanese whisk carved from a single piece of bamboo.

- Sift the Powder
Matcha powder is incredibly fine and naturally clumps together. Scoop 1–2 bamboo spoons of matcha into a fine-mesh sifter over your bowl. Sifting ensures a smooth blend and prevents bitter, powdery pockets at the bottom of your cup.
- Temperature Control
Pour 45–60 ml of hot water into the bowl. Never use boiling water, as it can burn the delicate green tea leaves and create a bitter taste. The sweet spot is around 80°C. Let your boiling kettle sit uncovered for two minutes before pouring.
- Whisk from the Wrist
Relax your forearm and whisk vigorously using a “W” or “M” motion, rather than stirring in circles. Keep the whisk hovering just above the bottom of the bowl to protect the bamboo prongs. Whisk rapidly for 20–30 seconds, until a thick, creamy foam with tiny bubbles covers the surface.
