The story in your cup

From Ottoman coffeehouses to your table

Coffee reached Istanbul in the 16th century, in the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent. By 1554 the city's first coffeehouses had opened in Tahtakale, and they quickly became the place to talk, swap news and linger over a small, strong cup.

The method has hardly changed since: finely ground coffee, cold water and sugar if you like it, heated slowly in a copper pot called a cezve until a thick foam rises. In 2013 UNESCO added Turkish coffee culture and tradition to its list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

  • —Why sand? It wraps the copper pot in gentle, even heat, so the coffee warms slowly and the foam builds without scorching.
  • —Traditionally it is served in a small cup with a glass of water on the side, and often something sweet.
  • —As the Turkish saying goes, a cup of coffee is remembered for forty years.
What will your cup say?

What will your cup say?

When your cup is empty, the fun begins. You cover it with the saucer, make a wish, turn it upside down and wait for it to cool. The grounds slide down the sides and leave shapes behind, and those shapes are read.

Tradition says the bottom of the cup speaks of the past and the rim of what is coming, and some say a cup can only see forty days ahead. It is light-hearted and just for fun, and best shared with a friend across the table.

  • —A bird: good news on its way.
  • —A fish: luck and new opportunities.
  • —A heart: love, or a friendship growing closer.
  • —A ship: a trip or a fresh start ahead.

Paint a piece you'll actually use

After the coffee and the reading, the table changes. You choose a ceramic mug or bowl and paint it however you like, with paints, brushes and guidance all laid out for you. It goes home with you at the end of the session, a keepsake from a very good morning.

  • —No experience needed. Every step is guided.
  • —Come solo, bring a friend, or bring the whole group.

The best. Most relaxing experience ever! The music made me feel like I'm on the set of Bridgerton (which i love!). Match was delicious too. I'm definitely gonna look out for more sessions like this. I highly recommend.

A lovely and relaxing experience! The matcha workshop was interesting and well presented, and painting our own cups made it even more special. The host Dönay was friendly and we left with great memories and a beautiful handmade souvenir. Highly recommend!

If you’ve had matcha in Japan, you’ll know how hard it is to find the same quality here. This is the only one in Australia that genuinely tastes authentic.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need any experience?

None at all. The coffee, the reading and the painting are all guided step by step, and most people in the room are doing it for the first time.

How long is the workshop?

About two hours from start to finish.

What is included in the price?

Your Turkish coffee, Turkish delight and baklava, a coffee fortune reading, a ceramic mug or bowl, all painting materials, step-by-step guidance, and the finished piece to take home.

What is a coffee fortune reading?

Kahve falı is a Turkish tradition. When you finish your coffee, the cup is covered with its saucer, turned upside down and left to cool, and the shapes left by the grounds are read. It is light-hearted and just for fun.

Why is the coffee brewed in sand?

Hot sand heats the copper pot gently and evenly from every side. The coffee warms slowly, which gives it time to build the thick foam Turkish coffee is known for, without scorching.

What will I paint?

A ceramic mug or a bowl. You choose which one on the day.

Is there caffeine in the coffee? What about allergies?

Yes, Turkish coffee contains caffeine. Baklava is made with nuts and wheat. If you have an allergy or would rather skip something, email hello@noamatcha.com before your session.

Can I book more than one seat?

Yes. Set the number of people in the buy box above and book them together in one order.

Can I change my session?

Yes. You can move to another session free of charge up to 7 days before the date you booked — email hello@noamatcha.com with your order number and we will move you across. If you need to cancel, that can be done for a full refund within 48 hours of paying; after that the seat is non-refundable.
